A New York man who assaulted former Washington, DC, Metropolitan Police Officer Michael Fanone in the course of the January 6, 2021, assault on the US Capitol pleaded responsible on Friday to a number of felony fees.

Thomas Sibick, 37, pleaded responsible to assaulting, resisting or impeding of an officer and two counts of theft.

On January 6, Sibick, together with others, attacked Fanone and forcibly took his badge and radio.

Prosecutors stated that Sibick falsely claimed to the FBI that he tried to assist Fanone and used the emergency button on the radio to sign assist. Yet proof confirmed that Sibick didn’t press the button till 16 minutes after Fanone was escorted to security.

Prosecutors additionally stated that Sibick was not truthful about what he did with Fanone’s badge and radio following the assault on the Capitol. While he instructed legislation enforcement he threw Fanone’s badge in a dumpster in Buffalo, New York, investigators later discovered that Sibick had buried Fanone’s badge in his yard. The badge was in the end returned to investigators lined in grime.
