Richard on lack of range
“I got here from a really un-diverse faculty and a bunch of college pals. With Notting Hill, I feel that I held on to the variety difficulty, to the sensation that I wouldn’t know how you can write these elements. And I feel I used to be simply kind of silly and unsuitable about that. I really feel as if me, my casting director, my producers simply didn’t give it some thought. Just didn’t look outwards sufficient,” Richard said, addressing the outrage over years against his films populated by mostly white characters.
Richard on fat-shaming
Richard also said in the same conversation that his daughter recently pointed out instances of fat-shaming in his 2003 directorial debut Love Actually. A character named Natalie (played by Martine McCutcheon) is often rebuked for her “massive” appearance and her “tree trunk thighs”. Hugh Grant’s character even calls her “heavy” in one of the scenes.
“I remember how shocked I was like five years ago, when Scarlett (his daughter) said to me, ‘You can never use the word fat again.’ I think I was behind, you know, behind the curve, and those jokes aren’t any longer funny, so I don’t feel I was malicious at the time, but I think I was unobservant and not as, you know, as clever as I should have been,” Richard said.
Notting Hill starred Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant, Bridget Jones’ Diary featured Renee Zellweger, and Love Actually had an ensemble cast including Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, and Alan Rickman.
