“He’s going out there and playing to the potential that everybody knows he has and he’s still working hard to get even better.

“But when he’s got the belief like he’s got at the moment, he becomes a real force.

“He had a really good pre-season up until Christmas then had a calf injury that put him back a few weeks, so he missed a lot of his training to be a five-eighth.

”But there’s little doubt in what he’s doing now. His place at fullback he’s performed all of it of his profession.

“He’s enjoying himself, that’s the biggest thing for me, he’s out there playing footy and smiling like he’s in the backyard and he’s feeding off the energy of the town.”

Ponga was extra modest in his appraisal and stated he’s merely trusting “the process” put in place by O’Brien.

“The coaching staff and the players kept everything the same,” Ponga stated on SEN.

Andrew Johns stated in The Sydney Morning Herald: “They’ve found a style that suits them, and Ponga’s decision not to feature in State of Origin is reaping huge rewards for his club. He’s on another planet to everyone else on the field at the moment.”

NO PASSENGERS

Incoming Dragons coach Shane Flanagan summed up Newcastle’s type finest when he was calling their recreation on Fox League final Sunday and declared there are merely no passengers within the facet.

England worldwide winger Dom Young is only one strive away from breaking the membership’s season file (21) set by Timana Tahu (2002) and Akuila Uate (2010).

“He’s hit his straps, both our wingers have got around 40 tries, Dom is having a breakout season and Greg (Marzhew) is only three tries behind him,” Buderus stated.

“Not only scoring tries but then bringing the ball out of the back end of the field, they’re really working hard.

“The tries are off the opportunity the guys inside them are creating.”

One of these gamers inside them is Bradman Best, who’s having a breakout season that earned the 22-year-old a Blues call-up in Origin III when he scored two tries on debut.

“Why are they playing so well? I think a lot of it comes down to heart. Bradman Best came up with a play when he saved a try against South Sydney, and you could see what it meant to not only his teammates, but the crowd,” Johns stated.

“It was a play the Knights have been built on for many decades.”

THE DETERMINED COACH

“Rolling out the same spine for the majority of the season has really paid dividends and he’s finally been able to train them the way he wants to train and play them the way he wants to play.

“It’s what Adam O’Brien set out to do, to really change the DNA and the fabric of the Knights and I think that has happened.

“We’ve lost five two-point games, we’ve been in most games, all bar one and all of sudden if you keep that same team out there and keep to your structures and identity of attack and defence then you’re in games more times than not.

“The last seven weeks we’ve come out with the W but we’ve been in most games this year and could have had a few more Ws.

“But we’re starting to play a real good style of footy which is attractive to not only the players but for people to watch.

“Everyone was always confident we’d get there if we kept working hard and now it’s all just coming together.

“His coaching philosophy hasn’t changed in the last seven weeks. Their identity hasn’t changed on both sides of the ball, they’re working hard and looking fit and fast and we’re in a really good position heading into the last couple of weeks.

“Still work to do but I think everyone can see the club we can be.”

ORIGIN FACTOR

“I’m really glad I did that. I do think it was the right decision.”

NSW assistant coach Buderus stated it labored each methods although and pointed to what a Blues debut did for Best’s confidence.
