“When I went for the job after Laurie finished I think Madge was going to apply but he ended up going in a different direction so he’s always been passionate about NSW,” Fittler stated.

“I think given what he’s done with New Zealand he’ll go in with a lot of confidence and that’ll be only good for the team.

“The fact he’s got that (Pacific Championships title) behind him will give everyone confidence coming in.

“That’s a big thing, to come in there and not spend your first week trying to get everyone’s respect. He walks straight in and he’s got focus straight away.”

When requested what qualities has as a coach that’ll swimsuit the job, Fittler joked “well we’re actually born on the same day” earlier than saying: “He’s confident, he has a belief and he backs himself. That’s what you want out of a coach.”

He added: “I don’t know him that well but he throws himself into a job and players at a high level respect that straight away.”
