‘It’s turning into tiresome’: Souths hit again at Gus’ Latrell criticism as Dogs boss’ motives questioned

South Sydney have fired again at Bulldogs’ General Manager of soccer Phil Gould, who recommended fullback Latrell Mitchell has but to ship within the massive moments.

Gould made the feedback on Channel 9’s 100% Footy on Monday night time, stating, “put him on the big stage in front of 50,000 in a preliminary final and he hasn’t done it yet. That’s where he has got to do it, he still hasn’t done that part yet and he’s got to do it.”

Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly slammed Gould’s feedback, labelling the Bulldogs supremo’s criticism of different golf equipment as “tiresome”.

“I think Latrell’s track record speaks for itself,” Solly stated.

“He has won Origin series, he has won two grand finals, he has won a World Cup. We have no doubt that he can and will perform on the big stage.

“To be honest, Phil Gould’s criticism of other clubs is becoming tiresome. We will just get on with making the rest of the season as successful as it can be.”

Mitchell appeared in two grand remaining profitable sides in 2018 and 2019 when the Roosters went back-to-back. He would be a part of the Rabbitohs in 2020 the place he’s been since.

The NRL 360 panel additionally disagreed with Gould’s feedback, pointing to those appearances in addition to Mitchell’s success within the consultant enviornment.

“I think he’s wrong. I think he’s won a couple of grand finals, he’s played at the biggest level. The hardest level is State of Origin and I remember that year (they won – 2021) and he dominated,” Gorden Tallis stated.

“He can do it with or without the ball. There’s no doubt that Latrell is a big game player. If I talk about Latrell I think he is a big game player. I don’t think Gus would say that if the Bulldogs were playing them in a grand final.”

Tallis’ 360 co-host Braith Anasta listed Mitchell’s achievements on the large stage, however posed the query if Gould was solely referring to the star full-back’s Souths profession.

“He has won two comps for the Roosters, he’s won an Origin series, he’s won a World Cup with Australia. But is he saying that it’s for South Sydney? Is that what he’s referring to?” Anasta requested.

“The year South Sydney made the grand final (2021) let’s remember Latrell was sidelined, Blake Taaffe came into the side. If Latrell plays that game, maybe he does have a grand final (for Souths),” veteran journalist Paul Crawley responded.

“I agree with Gordie completely, when you think of Latrell Mitchell, you think big game player. When he played those grand finals for the Roosters he did more than his job. When he’s played for NSW in the past, he’s the difference.

“He’s played his first game back in what, 10 weeks? He’s had 16 runs, 164 metres.

“You wonder with someone like Gus who loves to play his mind games if it’s his way of putting the fire under Latrell and stoking the fire to get him going. You truly do because why else would he come out and say that.”

The Daily Telegraph’s Dave Riccio was additionally in agreeance.

“Let’s put it this way guys, if you are going into a big game, do you want Latrell in your team or not in your team? The answer’s in your team. Big game player,” Riccio stated emphatically.

While not disagreeing along with his fellow panel members, Anasta tried to see the place Gould might need been coming from along with his feedback.

“Latrell is their best player by a long way. But if you break it down, he carried them through the finals game 1 and 2 last year, but in the prelim he didn’t quite. They came up against Penrith, who got the better of them in that second half,” Anasta stated.

“Gus must be seeing something there thinking that he needs to step up and go to another level on the biggest stage on the biggest days.”

Gould’s feedback have been the most recent in an extended line of critiques and digs of different groups.

Last week, Gould acknowledged the second-placed Broncos couldn’t win the premiership.

Gould’s job as an analyst on Channel 9 provides him the platform to offer his opinion on different groups across the competitors, regardless of the very fact he holds probably the most vital jobs on one of many greatest golf equipment within the NRL.

Tallis says he understands why different groups across the league could be pissed off.

“Gus is in a lucky situation that he can say it as a Channel 9 commentator and not a Bulldogs chief of football or whatever his title is,” Tallis stated.

“I would get s****y if I’m at the club. He had his shot at the Broncos and they didn’t like it so he can sit there and just pot shot anybody. And what’s the motive, because he can be quite cryptic.

“Is the motive sometimes to take the pressure of his own club?” Crawley opined.

“That’s what rival clubs are entitled to ask because you look at what Latrell adds to South Sydney and if you go through all the top paid players in the game, he’s earning his keep because they are consistently near the top of the table.”

Riccio make clear a little-discussed purpose why Mitchell is so vital to the Rabbitohs on and off the sector.

“One of the key factors in Latrell also being at Souths, and it’s not spoken about enough, is that players recruit players,” Riccio stated.

“The ability of South Sydney to keep this elite level squad together is a large by-product of Latrell Mitchell being there.

“Jack Wighton doesn’t sign at South Sydney if Latrell Mitchell isn’t there. That’s a huge factor.

“They are closer to winning the comp than ever before because of Latrell and next year with Jack Wighton they’ll be an even stronger team and it’s only because Latrell is there.”
