Kalyn Ponga heads abroad for testing as Knights present replace on star’s concussion restoration

Newcastle Knights five-eighth Kalyn Ponga has travelled abroad to Canada because the membership explores all choices to help his restoration from concussion.

Ponga has been sidelined since struggling a head knock within the opening minutes of Newcastle’s recreation towards the Wests Tigers in spherical two.

The 24-year-old had already been given an prolonged break on the finish of the 2022 season after struggling repeated concussions.

Ponga’s newest concussion forged doubt over his rapid and long-term enjoying future with Knights coach Adam O’Brien not placing a timeline on the playmaker’s return.

Now, in an announcement launched on Friday morning, the Knights confirmed Ponga has travelled to Vancouver, the place he’ll undertake additional assessments.

“Kalyn will undergo testing using a device that measures neurophysiological markers, which in turn will assist clinical decision making around recovery following concussion and provide further objective information to guide our clinicians,” the membership stated in an announcement.

“The assessment will involve technology that is approved for use in Northern America however not yet available in Australia.”

Ponga was accompanied by Knights chief medical officer Dr Jin Lee within the journey to Vancouver, with the membership confirming the pair had left Australia on Friday.

“Management of concussion is a complex issue for everyone involved, we see this an opportunity to gather additional information to assist Kalyn in his recovery,” Knights director of soccer Peter Parr stated.

“Our broader aim, under the guidance of Professor Levi, is to develop a model of care that will advance our capacity in supporting players with concussion.

“Kalyn remains in good spirits and wishes to thank everyone who has enquired about his health.”
