‘Only getting started’: Maroons’ enormous coup as Slater inks three-year extension

Queensland coach Billy Slater has reportedly signed a three-year extension to stay on the helm of the Maroons till the top of 2026.

Terms have been formally agreed upon in line with The Courier Mail in an enormous coup for the dominant Maroons.

In his first two collection on the helm, Slater has gone back-to-back and is now searching for the elusive three-peat.

The 40-year-old was a free agent after the 2023 collection victory, however after signing on issued a warning to NSW: “I believe we are only getting started”.

“From the very beginning, I was drawn to this role because I deeply understand the importance of this team to all Queenslanders,” Slater stated.

“I’m a proud Queenslander and this team means a lot to me.

“It has been a massive part of my life and I’m extremely grateful to get the opportunity to help other people, not only fulfil their dream, but inspire our state.”

QRL officers feared Slater can be courted by an NRL membership after beginning his teaching profession with a bang.

But QRL chief government Ben Ikin stated re-signing Slater was a “brilliant outcome” for the proud rugby league state.

“Over the past two years we’ve witnessed a team that has made Queenslanders immensely proud, and it’s been Billy’s vision and leadership driving that,” Slater stated.

“Our players are not only going to new levels on the field, but their commitment to engaging with our fans across the state has been first class.

“We’re excited to have Billy lead our team for the next three years and we look forward to start planning for the 2024 series.”
