“Looking back it just all happened to quickly and I actually got a head knock early in the first half so I played a lot of the game dazed. I split my ear and some of the game was a bit hazy,” he mentioned.

“But I do remember the pass off Tonie Carroll in particular, I think he went to cut me out and hit the winger but I sort of snatched the ball, got into the corner and scored.

“There’s so much emotion that goes with scoring a try in a grand final, it’s a pretty surreal feeling.

“We hadn’t quite iced the game then, there was still a little while to go there so whilst we celebrated it was sort of back on the job to get it sorted.”

The attempt wasn’t truly Tate’s favorite second of the sport — it was the full-time siren when he felt “elation and relief.”

“I remember running to Corey Parker, who’s still a great mate of mine, and giving him a cuddle because we had played against each other in our juniors and then our whole Broncos career together so it was just a really awesome moment to go and grab him,” Tate recalled.

“That was probably my favourite moment… just the relief of ‘we’ve done it, we’ve won’.

He also picked out another moment that he now looks back on and laughs but said at the time was a big motivator.

“I remember late in the game when we were up but the game was still very much in the balance, Shaun Berrigan was running around saying to everyone ‘just hang on, if we win this we’ll have the keys to the city’,” Tate laughed.

So did they?

“We definitely got the keys to the city and we celebrated pretty hard actually,” Tate mentioned.

“It was good fun, we went back to the Broncos (headquarters) and there was a whole heap of people there.

“We had the night after the grand final back at the leagues club and that was really fun because it was just us and all our families.

“We celebrated pretty hard. I remember Dane Carlaw put the trophy through the Broncos boardroom roof accidentally, he went to lift it up and it went straight through the roof.

“We partied long and hard for a good week or so.”

Tate spent another season with the Broncos earlier than becoming a member of the Warriors for 3 years. He completed his profession with 4 seasons on the Cowboys earlier than asserting his retirement in September 2014 — a 12 months earlier than the membership gained its maiden premiership.

That 2006 season in Brisbane is one he’ll bear in mind without end.

“It’s funny, when you finish your footy career the only things you’ve got are things like playing State of Origin or winning a grand final that you can really reflect upon,” he mentioned.

“So now to be able to sit back and say I am a premiership winner, I’ve got the ring and understand how important and hard it is to get — not many people get the opportunity to do it.

“You do sit back now retired with a real smile on your face. I’m thankful I got the opportunity.

“It happened pretty early on in my career, I thought I’d get a couple more opportunities but I didn’t.

“But there’s a lot of players that don’t get the chance to play in one, let alone win one.

“I cherish the ring, I cherish the memories and now that I’m retired it’s definitely something I hang my hat on.”
