China calls for U.S. carry metal, aluminum tariffs after WTO ruling

China’s Commerce Ministry has demanded the U.S. instantly carry tariffs imposed on Chinese metal and aluminum merchandise after the World Trade Organization dominated in favor of Washington towards Beijing within the nations’ tariff dispute.

A WTO dispute settlement panel stated Wednesday that China acted “inconsistently” with the WTO obligations by imposing extra duties on some U.S. imports in response to U.S. tariffs on metal and aluminum.

The U.S. levied 25% tariffs on China-imported metal and 10% on Chinese aluminum in 2018 on national-security grounds. Then President Donald Trump cited the necessity to shield home producers from international overproduction of the metals.

In response, Beijing imposed extra duties of between 15% and 25% on some U.S. imports.

In an announcement late Wednesday, China’s Commerce Ministry stated it’s learning the WTO report and can observe up in accordance with WTO guidelines.

The ministry additionally stated the foundation reason for the dispute lies within the “unilateralist and protectionist behaviors” of the U.S.
