Durable-goods orders drop 6.1% in January on fewer airplane contracts

U.S. orders for sturdy items sank 6.1% in January, virtually fully due to Boeing signing hardly any airplane contracts. Economists polled by The Wall Street Journal had forecast a 5% decline.

Orders excluding transportation slipped a small 0.3% final month.
