Celebrity Couples Who Met on Set

On-screen romances are one thing, but it’s a much different, far more realistic story when actors end up falling in love on the set. Sometimes, actors and actresses can’t help but become attached to each other while working long hours during filming, and all of the movie and TV stars on this list met their partners-to-be during rigorous Hollywood workdays.

The bright lights and shouting directors on the set of big-budget productions from studios like MGM and Touchstone might not seem like the ideal places for a whirlwind romance, but, for these Hollywood couples, the sets did the trick in helping them find love.

1. Madonna and Sean Penn

Movie: Material Girl

Location: Hollywood, California

Year: 1985

Madonna and Sean Penn started dating in the mid-1980s after the two met on the set of Madonna’s music video for her hit single, “Material Girl.” The actor and the singer had both just gotten out of relationships at the time, and they weren’t looking for anything serious.

They remained friends, but their friendship soon became a full-on romance. They got married four years after meeting, but the marriage didn’t last. Madonna filed for divorce twice, and the second time, in 1989, the divorce stuck. The Material Girl cited “irreconcilable differences” between the two, putting an end to a tumultuous, tabloid-frenzied relationship.

2. Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz

Movie: Les Grandes Horizontales

Location: London, England

Year: 1994

Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz have been married for more than ten years, and the British couple were close friends before tying the knot back in 2011. The two met on the set of a play called Les Grandes Horizontales. Though they didn’t begin dating immediately in 1994, they eventually found their way back to each other in December of 2010.

Though they didn’t meet on some big MGM set or something flashy, Les Grandes Horizontales is still a solid play that has received a lot of critical acclaim. The London theater production, hosted by the National Theatre Studio, is a dark romance with an amorous plot that couldn’t help but bring Weisz and Craig together.

3. Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult

Movie: X-Men: First Class

Location: London, England

Year: 2010

Funny as always, Jennifer Lawrence described her and ex-boyfriend Nicholas Hoult as “two perverted Homer Simpsons.” The superstar actors met in 2010 when they were filming the Marvel movie X-Men: First Class. Lawrence told Elle Magazine that the actor was her “best friend” because he could make the Oscar-winner “laugh harder than anybody.”

Jennifer Lawrence & Nicholas Hoult @ilovehoitytoity / Facebook.com

They dated for a few years, but, as both are top-tier stars in Hollywood, they got too busy for a relationship. As E! News put it, they spent too much time apart due to work, and that put a strain on their relationship. Both actors have moved on, and Lawrence is now married.

4. Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher

Movie: That ‘70s Show

Location: Studio City, California
Year: 1998

Another favorite Hollywood couple that has lasted is Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher. The two stars first met on the set of their hit sitcom, That ‘70s Show, though sparks didn’t fly immediately, as Kunis was fourteen and Kutcher was twenty.

The castmates were merely working professionals until 2012 when they rekindled their relationship. Kutcher and Kunis went from co-stars on a Fox show to husband and wife, as they were married in 2015. Now, the pair have two kids together, Dimitri and Wyatt. Will we see a project co-starring the couple in the future? Who can say, but fans certainly hope so.

5. Grace and Trai Byers

Movie: Empire

Location: Chicago

Year: 2015

Some couples look so aesthetically good together that it just makes perfect sense. Grace and Trai Byers connected on the set of Empire in 2015, but Grace was in a committed relationship at the time. After realizing that the relationship wasn’t going to work out, she ended things.

Shortly after, the pair started dating and announced their engagement, tying the knot in 2016 at Grand Cayman Island. Judging by their gushing social media posts, they’re head over heels in love and that’s not going to change anytime soon.

6. Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton

Movie: The Voice
Location: Hollywood, California

Year: 2015

The Voice has quickly become one of the most popular reality shows on TV right now. The singing competition features would-be stars hoping to capture the attention of one of the celebrity judges, who will move them forward in the competition.

Two such celebrity judges were singers Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton, who met on the set of the NBC show in 2015. The pair hit it off immediately, and they began dating. They released music together, something that delighted fans who were interested to see how well the pop star’s and country star’s music meshed together. In 2020, Stefani and Shelton got engaged.

7. Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy

Movie: Evening

Location: Newport, Rhode Island

Year: 2007

Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy are yet another famous couple to meet on a movie set. The pair met while filming the 2006 movie Evening, and, though Danes had, at the time, sworn off relationships after a string of bad luck, she couldn’t help but give Dancy a chance.

Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy @JustJared / Twitter.com

The two didn’t necessarily fall in love while acting, however. According to their co-star Mamie Gummer, the pair bonded over a love of Scrabble and Boggle. The pair would later keep their relationship both off-screen and on when they starred on the show Homeland together. For those who want more Claire Danes in their life, the actress has a new show on Apple+ called Essex Serpent.

8. Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck

Movie: Pearl Harbor

Location: Honolulu, Hawaii

Year: 2000

Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck were once the Hollywood “it” couple, and the pair actually met in 2000 on the set of Pearl Harbor. Though many people believe that the 2002 movie Daredevil was the site of these two star-crossed lovers’ union, it was actually the gritty war drama, which was filmed two years prior.

Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck @GlamourEspana / Facebook.com

Affleck and the Neutrogena spokeswoman didn’t really strike up a relationship during Pearl Harbor. Garner was married at the time to Scott Foley, another actor, so it wasn’t until Daredevil that they two were able to strike up a friendship. They were married three years later in late June of 2005, staying married for thirteen years.

9. Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson

Movie: Saturday Night Live

Location: New York City, New York

Year: 2014

Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande, for a short time, were a Hollywood “it couple.” The two met when Grande hosted Saturday Night Live, and the pair quickly became close friends. They went on their first date in May of 2018, and they got engaged almost immediately after.

Saturday Night Live - Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson @theinsidexpress / Pinterest.com

It was a short-lived engagement (the whole relationship was really a whirlwind), as fewer than five months later, the singer and the comedian split. Part of the reason for their split was the death of rapper Mac Miller, Grande’s ex. Davidson said that he knew the relationship was over when it happened, and he said he remained supportive from a distance after their breakup.

10. Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem

Movie: Jamon Jamon

Location: Zaragoza, Spain

Year: 1992

When Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem first met on the set of Jamon Jamon, a Spanish-language film, the actors hadn’t exactly had their big breaks yet. Both were considered “rising stars” in the Hollywood world, and the success of Jamon Jamon definitely furthered their career, turning them into the superstars they are today.

However, the Disney star and Bardem wouldn’t begin dating in the early 1990s, as Cruz was just sixteen. Instead, their love story took a little while to begin, with the two starting their relationship in 2010, officially appearing as a couple during the Goya Awards that year.

11. Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied

Movie: Black Swan

Location: New York City, New York

Year: 2009

In 2020, Natalie Portman celebrated eight years of marriage to her husband, dancer Benjamin Millepied. They met on the set of the dark, psychological thriller Black Swan, where Portman was the star of the movie and Millepied was the choreographer.

Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied @Dior / Twitter.com

The intense, harrowing film, which isn’t exactly as cheery as the ABC show Dancing with the Stars, might have been dark, but Portman’s and Millepied’s love story has been anything but. Portman described Millepied as her “love,” and said that he gave her the “most important role” of her life: being a mother. The pair have two kids, Amalia and Aleph.

12. Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow

Movie: Se7en

Location: Los Angeles, California

Year: 1994

Actress and business owner Gwyneth Paltrow described her and Brad Pitt as “a very ‘90s couple.” The two definitely looked the part, often donning near-matching 1990s fashion choices together. The actors met on set when they were filming the movie Se7en, a crime drama that made over $320 million at the box office.

Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow @celebrityhome / Pinterest.com

Pitt and Paltrow began dating in 1994. Later, they got engaged, but things didn’t work out. Paltrow moved on with actor Ben Affleck, and Pitt, of course, moved on with actress Jennifer Aniston a few years later. Neither actor really discusses their ‘90s romance, though the few comments they’ve made reveal that there doesn’t seem to have been bad blood.

13. Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling

Movie: The Place Beyond the Pines

Location: Schenectady, New York

Year: 2012

Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling are one of Hollywood’s longest-lasting (and best-looking) couples, and the two are famously private about their personal life. But, when talking to OprahMag.com, Mendes did confirm that she and Gosling met on the set of The Place Beyond the Pines.

Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling @CELEBUZZ / Facebook.com

After the pair met on the set of the violent, thought-provoking drama, they began dating. The Pantene spokeswoman opened up to OprahMag.com about how Gosling changed her life, saying she didn’t want to have kids until she met her longtime partner. The two are now parents of two daughters, Esmeralda Amada and Amada Lee.

14. Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively

Movie: Green Lantern

Location: New Orleans, Louisiana

Year: 2010

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively are (almost) everyone’s favorite Hollywood “it” couple. The pair are known for their social media hijinks and flirtatious behavior, even though they’ve been married for years. They met on the scene of Green Lantern back in 2010, but sparks didn’t fly immediately.

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively @MLBONFOX / Twitter.com

As Reynolds revealed in an interview, they were both with other people at the time. The M.C.U. star was married to Black Widow actress Scarlett Johansson, while Lively was dating her Gossip Girl co-star. Reynolds said the two were just “buddies,” until they reconnected a few years later and began dating.

15. Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn

Movie: The One and Only
Location: Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

Year: 1966

As one report put it, the love story between Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell is a four-decade tale of romance. The two met for the first time on The One and Only, a Disney film, in 1966. However, they didn’t fall in love right away.

Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn ©Bart Sherkow / Shutterstock.com

They actually waited almost twenty years (and several boyfriends and girlfriends for each of them) before reconnecting. They met up again while on the set of yet another movie, Swing Shift, in 1984. The second time was the charm, and they went on their first date, which the couple described as “pretty crazy.” Crazy or not, they’ve been inseparable ever since.

16. Vincent Kartheiser and Alexis Bledel

Movie: Mad Men

Location: Los Angeles, California

Year: 2012

Luckily, the love story between Alexis Bledel and Vincent Kartheiser went far better than the love stories we saw on Mad Men, a period TV show that featured a whole lot of drama, infidelity, and sales tactics (however, everyone got to fall in love with Jon Hamm, so that made the nail-biting worth it).

Vincent Kartheiser and Alexis Bledel @GilmoreGirlsofStarsHollow / Facebook.com

Bledel had a guest appearance as Beth Dawes on Mad Men’s fifth season in 2012, while Kartheiser was a season regular. When they met on set, the pair quickly had a love connection, announcing that they were dating. They got married two years later.

17. Rose Leslie and Kit Harington

Movie: Game of Thrones

Location: Belfast, Northern Ireland

Year: 2011

Game of Thrones featured dragons, battles, monsters, and, apparently, love behind the scenes. Kit Harington and Rose Leslie first met while they were filming the HBO TV show, and they began dating in 2011. No one knew they were dating until the paparazzi snapped a picture of them holding hands a year later, but the real love story took place in 2011.

On GoT, Leslie was playing Ygritte, a woman of the Free Folk, while Harington, of course, played the fan-favorite Jon Snow. The two were wed at a real-life castle in 2018, and they welcomed their first child together in the late winter of 2021.

18. Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli

Movie: Orange Is the New Black

Location: Litchfield, New York

Year: 2012

Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli started out the way that all long-lasting couples do: as friends. The pair met while filming their hit TV show, Orange Is the New Black. Morelli was a writer for the show, while Wiley had a leading role on the cult favorite. Morelli was married when they met, but she knew Wiley was the one for her.

Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli ©Kathy Hutchins / Shutterstock.com

Morelli ditched her husband and began dating the woman she’d had a crush on since they met. The pair might have started out as just friends, but things took off, and they were engaged in 2016 and married a year later. Happily, the women welcomed their first child together in 2021.

19. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith

Movie: Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

Location: Hollywood, California

Year: 1994

Buckle your seatbelts, cause this one is a wild ride—though it has a very happy ending. Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith are one of the longest-lasting and funniest couples in Hollywood, but everything didn’t start off perfectly.

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith ©DFree / Shutterstock.com

The pair met while on the set of Will’s show, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, in 1994. However, Jada didn’t get the part because she was too short (the role went to Nia Long). Though there had been a connection, Will started dating Sheree Zampino, and the pair got married and had a son together. It didn’t work between Will and Sheree, and he and Jada finally linked up in 1995.

20. Annette Bening and Warren Beatty

Movie: Bugsy

Location: Pasadena, Los Angeles

Year: 1991

Warren Beatty and Annette Bening connected a little later in life while starring in the 1991 movie Bugsy. Despite a near two-decade age difference, the couple has thrived for almost 30 years. Despite Warren trying to date Bening previously, their plans had fallen through. That all changed on Bugsy.

Their romance escalated quickly from that point onwards, with Annette welcoming their first child just a month after the movie premiered in theaters. They went on to build a happy life together as two A-listers with plenty of pull in the industry.

21. Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield

Movie: The Amazing Spider-Man
Location: Los Angeles, California

Year: 2010

The Amazing Spider-Man rocketed into theaters in 2010, and it brought with it more than just action-packed superhero sequences. Two of the film’s stars, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone met on set and began dating the next year, after they had officially split from their significant others.

Though the two of them broke up in 2015, there were no hard feelings. Reportedly, they split because of their busy schedules, but, as one friend told Cheat Sheet, they still have “immense love” for each other. The pair are still friends, so it appears that all’s well that ends well with these two Spider-Man stars.

22. Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco

Movie: The Big Bang Theory

Location: Burbank, California

Year: 2007

Fans and critics hoping for some big dramatic story between Big Bang Theory co-stars Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco can dash those hopes, as the pair were quite amicable, even though their relationship, which lasted from 2007 until 2009, didn’t work out.

Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco ©s_bukley / Shutterstock.com

Cuoco and Galecki quietly began dating during the early seasons of the hit sitcom. But, as Cuoco told CBS Watch, it “never went anywhere.” Though the relationship was “wonderful,” it just wasn’t for them, and they split up. The two still remained close friends, and they filmed The Big Bang Theory together for ten years, working amicably—and making millions of dollars, to boot.

23. Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth

Movie: The Last Song

Location: Tybee Island, Georgia

Year: 2009

The Last Song started filming in 2009, and another important thing began that year, too: the relationship between singer Miley Cyrus and actor Liam Hemsworth. The Hollywood stars have had an up-and-down relationship for over a decade, with tabloids following their every movie.

After they met on the set, Cyrus said that Hemsworth became her “best friend…in the world.” The pair got married in 2019 in a private, intimate ceremony in Tennessee, getting back to Cyrus’ country roots. Though Hemsworth split from the Hannah Montana star later that year, they still had quite a few laughs and fun times together over the years.

24. Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan-Tatum

Movie: Step Up

Location: Baltimore, Maryland

Year: 2006

Another famous couple that equally-as-famously met on set was Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan-Tatum, who met on the set of Step Up, a dance movie. You can tell from even the audition video that the two actors had chemistry right away, though Tatum was reportedly a little hesitant to begin dating Dewan.

Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan-Tatum @Wonderwall / Facebook.com

However, he shook off those jitters, and the two began dating shortly after the release of the Touchstone movie. They got married in 2009, and they stayed married for nine years, until the pressures of work, sadly, split them up. Still, Step Up lives on as one of the best romantic movies of the 2000s.

25. Brad Pitt and Juliette Lewis

Movie: Too Young to Die

Location: Taft, California

Year: 1989

Brad Pitt, a Hollywood icon, has revealed that one of his most significant relationships was with actress Juliette Lewis. The two met on the set of their 1990 film “Too Young to Die” when Pitt was 27 and Lewis was 17. Despite the age difference, they became a high-profile couple and dated for three years before ending their relationship in early 1993.

@WireImage/Twitter.com

In an interview, Pitt expressed his continued affection for Lewis, calling it one of the greatest relationships he had ever been in. However, Lewis has mentioned that Pitt is no longer part of her universe and emphasized that their relationship is in the past.

26. Emily Vancamp and Joshua Bowman

Movie: Revenge

Location: Los Angeles, California

Year: 2011

Not only were Emily VanCamp and Josh Bowman dating in real life after meeting on the set of Revenge, their TV show characters, Emily and Daniel, were dating on the show, too. At least, until (spoiler alert), Daniel died during season four.

Emily Vancamp and Joshua Bowman @Emily Vancamp and Joshua Bowman / Facebook.com

The pair met in 2011, and they began a relationship that has continued to this day. Though the show ended in 2015, VanCamp and Bowman are still married and loving life. VanCamp, who is a favorite among Marvel fans, told People in 2021 that she’s “so grateful” that she has been able to find time to spend with her husband, despite their busy schedules.

27. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

Movie: Mr. and Mrs. Smith

Location: Los Angeles, California

Year: 2005

Of all the Hollywood stars on this list, few shine as brightly as Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. And few have as widely-known a love story as the two of them. Their tale could go on for pages, but we’ll keep it simple. Pitt and Jolie met on the set of their thriller, Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

Not only were the two on-screen love interests, they kindled a romance on the set as well. Pitt left actress Jennifer Aniston for Jolie, who gave up acting for activism and recently starred in the Disney movie Maleficent. Though the pair have since split, they were together for a long time—twelve years in total.

28. Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens

29. Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux

Movie: Tropic Thunder

Year: 2007

Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux ©Kathy Hutchins / Shutterstock.com

It was there that she met her future husband, Justin Theroux. They didn’t begin dating for a few years, though Aniston did say that he was the “nicest person in the world.” They began dating in 2011, and they got married in 2015. Though the marriage didn’t last, the two say that they remain “best friends” who “look forward” to staying that way.

30. Rob McElhenney and Kaitlin Olson

Movie: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Location: Philadelphia and Los Angeles

Year: 2005

Kaitlin later told Dax Shephard, “Like, once I fell in love with him, I realized that I was deeply in love with him in a way that I hadn’t been in love with anyone before.” They tied the knot in 2008 and walked away into the sunset.

31. Rachel Bilson and Hayden Christensen

Movie: Jumper

Location: Peterborough, Ontario

Though they called off the wedding in 2010, the split wasn’t forever. They reconnected three months later before Christmas and, in 2014, Bilson and Christensen welcomed their child, a daughter named Briar Rose. The two split in 2017 due to their work schedules not lining up, but Bilson is now with a new actor boyfriend: S.N.L. star Bill Hader.

32. Adam Brody and Leighton Meester

Movie: The Oranges

Location: New Rochelle, New York

Year: 2011

Adam Brody and Leighton Meester ©Kathy Hutchins / Shutterstock.com

However, in March of 2021, Brody finally filled us in on all the details. The pair met in 2011 on the set of the movie The Oranges. They hit it off immediately, and they began dating quietly. Movie: Bosom Buddies

Rita and Tom first crossed paths when he was starring on the show Bosom Buddies. Rita appeared in one episode.

He later told GQ, “Rita and I just looked at each other and — kaboing! — that was that. I asked Rita if it was the real thing for her, and it just couldn’t be denied.” With his marriage already on the rocks, it didn’t take long for the split to happen. By 1988, Tom and Rita were happily married.

In an interview with People, she confessed it was such a magical moment during the service that she just burst into tears. “I just started sobbing. Peter thought I was crying because I was so moved by the service,” she said. “No, it was because I was just overwhelmed, realizing he was the one.” They both said their vows two years later in Santa Barbara.

Movie: Once Upon a Time

Location: Richmond, BC, Canada

The pair played love interests on the show, but despite striking up a romance, they tried to keep it hidden from the cast and crew, determined to remain professional. Just a few months after they started dating, they eloped to Las Vegas and tied the knot in a very low-key ceremony. They’ve lived happily ever after since.

42. Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons

Movie: Fargo

Sal Mineo and Natalie Wood also starred, and Wood and Dean struck up an on-set romance during filming.

Wood was using the film to transition into adult roles, and she had Dean to thank for getting the part over Jayne Mansfield and Debbie Reynolds. The two would meet in a Chateau Marmont bungalow during filming, though their love affair, tragically, never became anything more.
