Magic Beyond Middle-earth: “The Lord of the Rings” Cast Two Decades Later

2. Dominic Monaghan – Meriadoc Brandybuck “Merry”

Age: 47

In the early 2000s, this graduate of Catholic Aquinas College in the suburbs of Manchester became a star of one of the most popular film franchises, and in the latter half of the decade, one of the most popular series, the mystical Robinsonade titled “Lost” (playing the role of the rocker-addict Charlie earned Dominic the prestigious Screen Actors Guild Award).

Occasionally, there were reports in the press about the “extravagant” actions of the Englishman – a passionate nature lover: Monaghan was reported to have bought a mango forest in India or kept a praying mantis as a pet. But when the documentary project “Dominic Monaghan and the Most Wild Creatures” premiered on BBC America in January 2013 (the actor, traveling the world, introduced viewers to “charming” centipedes or venomous snakes), few were surprised. The program lasted three seasons and earned its creator a nomination for an Emmy in the category of “Best Unstructured Reality Show.”

Among the actor’s recent works are the historical adventure film “Edge of the World” and the detective thriller “Waldo,” where Monaghan’s partners were Mel Gibson and Morena Baccarin. As for Dominic’s personal life, society chroniclers know nothing: although Monaghan lives in Los Angeles, where paparazzi are everywhere, he always appears alone in public places.
